What is Glaucoma?
Glaucoma refers to a group of eye diseases that can damage the optic nerve and lead to permanent vision loss. In many cases, glaucoma is associated with increased pressure inside the eye, known as intraocular pressure (IOP).
Treatment is focused on lowering eye pressure to help protect the optic nerve and reduce the risk of additional vision loss. Depending on the type and severity of glaucoma, treatment may include medications, laser treatment, minimally invasive procedures, or more traditional glaucoma surgery.
Buffalo Ambulatory Surgery Center offers a comprehensive range of surgical and minimally invasive treatment options for glaucoma. Your ophthalmologist will recommend the treatment best suited to your individual condition.
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS)
Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery, commonly referred to as MIGS, includes a variety of procedures designed to lower intraocular pressure using microscopic incisions and specialized devices or techniques.
For appropriate patients, MIGS procedures may offer a less invasive alternative to traditional glaucoma surgery. Many MIGS procedures are performed at the same time as cataract surgery, although certain procedures may also be performed independently.
Buffalo Ambulatory Surgery Center offers a broad range of MIGS and advanced glaucoma procedures, including:
iStent
The iStent is a microscopic implant designed to improve the natural drainage of fluid from the eye. By increasing aqueous fluid outflow, the procedure can help reduce intraocular pressure in appropriate patients with glaucoma.
Hydrus Microstent
The Hydrus Microstent is a small implant placed within the eye’s natural drainage pathway. It is designed to improve the flow of fluid through the eye’s drainage system and help lower intraocular pressure.
Goniotomy
Goniotomy is a minimally invasive procedure that treats the eye’s natural drainage system by opening or removing a portion of tissue that may be restricting the outflow of fluid. Improving drainage can help reduce pressure inside the eye.
Different specialized technologies and instruments may be used to perform goniotomy depending on the patient’s condition and the surgeon’s preferred approach.
iDose TR
Buffalo Ambulatory Surgery Center also offers iDose TR, an innovative treatment option for certain patients with open-angle glaucoma or ocular hypertension.
Unlike traditional glaucoma eye drops that must be administered regularly, iDose TR is a small, sustained-release implant placed inside the eye. The implant is designed to continuously deliver glaucoma medication directly within the eye for an extended period of time to help reduce intraocular pressure.
For appropriate patients, iDose TR may help reduce the burden associated with daily glaucoma eye drops while providing ongoing treatment to control eye pressure.
Additional Glaucoma Procedures
In addition to MIGS and advanced glaucoma treatments, Buffalo Ambulatory Surgery Center performs other glaucoma procedures when more significant pressure reduction or a different surgical approach is necessary.
Because glaucoma varies considerably from patient to patient, there is no single procedure that is appropriate for everyone. Your ophthalmologist will consider the type and severity of your glaucoma, current eye pressure, medications, previous procedures, overall eye health, and treatment goals when recommending the most appropriate surgical option.
The goal of glaucoma treatment is to lower eye pressure and help protect the optic nerve from further damage. Glaucoma procedures cannot restore vision that has already been lost from optic nerve damage, making continued monitoring and follow-up care an important part of glaucoma management.
Our team at Buffalo Ambulatory Surgery Center is committed to making your surgical experience as comfortable, safe, and efficient as possible while providing the high-quality ophthalmic care our patients have come to expect.
